East Dene Firework Party Lights Up Bonchurch

Event summary by Jane Cox

On Saturday 1st November, Bonchurch came alive in the most heart-warming way. Around 150 residents, family, and friends gathered at East Dene for an evening that sparkled with food, laughter, and community spirit.

Hosts Kelly and Eddie Saunders, together with their family and friends, opened the doors of their beautifully refurbished home – the first time East Dene had welcomed the village since before Covid. Once again, this much-loved Bonchurch landmark was filled with music, chatter, and the unmistakable warmth of neighbours reconnecting.

Guests arrived with homemade dishes and bottles to share, creating a feast that celebrated every taste imaginable – from hearty cottage pies and fragrant curries to colourful salads, trifles, and more cakes than anyone could count. The long tables in the hall were set with fresh cloths, candles, and twinkling lanterns, while outside, fairy lights draped across the terraces added a little extra magic to the November night.

Eddie manned the barbecue like a pro, serving up perfectly grilled bangers and burgers, the scent mingling with the laughter and music drifting through the grounds. Children ran about with sparklers, neighbours caught up after years apart, and everywhere you looked there was that unmistakable feeling of joy – and of community.

As the evening continued, guests made their way to the lower field for the night’s highlight. With the sea and moon as a backdrop, a giant bonfire roared to life, sending golden sparks into the dark. Then came the fireworks – fifteen minutes of pure wonder as reds, greens, and golds lit up the sky and reflected over the fields and water beyond. It was a truly spectacular display.

For those preferring a quieter view, heaters and seating on the terrace meant everyone could enjoy the show in comfort – a thoughtful touch that captured the care and inclusivity of the whole evening.

When the last firework faded, guests wandered home past glowing pumpkins, flickering candles, and a few cheeky talking ghouls. Giant skeletons guarded the gates, grinning proof that Bonchurch knows how to throw a party with style (and just a hint of mischief!).

As one guest said, “It felt like the village was alive again.”

A heartfelt thank you to Kelly, Eddie, and their family for opening their doors and their hearts, and to everyone who helped make the evening run so smoothly. It was a night to remember – full of laughter, friendship, and the warm glow of community spirit – and the perfect way to begin Bonchurch’s winter season.

Bonchurch at its best: together, joyful, and glowing bright.
