Bonchurch in Bloom: A Weekend of Gardens, Community and Cream Teas
For one midsummer weekend, Bonchurch opened its gates — not just to gardens, but to the spirit of the village itself.
Rain fell softly on Saturday, but it didn’t deter the steady stream of visitors making their way along stone paths, through hand-painted gates and into some of the most loved corners of Bonchurch. With seventeen gardens on show, including first-time favourite East Dene with its sweeping sea views, and Elcombe House, home to award-winning bonsai trees, this year’s Open Gardens offered a rich and varied portrait of place.
Plant sales thrived, the shuttle bus worked tirelessly, and volunteers greeted guests with maps and stories. Originally a quiet tradition that began in 1984, when local garden owners began casually opening their gates, the event has grown — but never lost its charm.
The weather may have been mixed, but the mood was unmistakably warm.
